Gay Mystery Writer Disinvited
» Homophobia
You invite a gay mystery writer to come give a talk. Then you realize that there are some, well, homoerotic passages in his novels. Must be a perv. So you tell him, never mind, just stay home.
The letter from Belper WI’s programme secretary Shirley Sheldon said: “I will have to cancel your visit to Belper WI. After reading the press reviews the committee have decided it will not be suitable for our members.”
Mr [Narvel] Annable a retired teacher, who writes mysteries involving gay men in Derbyshire, was upset and angry.
He said: “It was shocking to receive such a homophobic reaction from the Belper WI.
“I just think it is blatant discrimination and is unacceptable in this day and age. My book Lost Lad does have a few erotic passages but that does not reflect on my behaviour.
“Would they have cancelled Agatha Christie because she knew too much about murders? They seem to be confusing me with my characters.”
No gay sex please we’re the Belper WI
