On Saturday, two years after coming out to the entire nation, Will Young came home. With a set designed to show his versatility – dance number, acoustic tear-jerker, anthem – he appeared at the legendary Gay Pride after-party at Soho nightclub G.A.Y.

“The funny thing is that I’ve never been to Gay Pride before, so the whole thing was a first for me,” Will says, nursing an orange juice and soda at the Covent Garden Hotel.

“I remember when I was 17, before I’d come out, I got caught up in the march section as it passed through Central London and my friend was saying: ‘Quick, let’s get out of here…’ and I was saying: ‘Um, well, maybe we should stay. It looks quite interesting…”

Eight years later, the Pop Idol voted the nation’s favourite by 4.6 million fans found himself the star attraction. “It felt right,” he says. “It’s not like I harp on about being gay, but I am a gay artist and there aren’t many of us out there.
