Adjunct professor and teacher of Gay and Lesbian Studies at Wayne State University’s School of Social Work Joe Kort and author of 10 Smart Things Gay Men Can Do to Find Real Love and 10 Smart Things Gay Men Can Do to Improve Their Lives, joins Internet Radio Host Ilene Dillon, MSW, to discuss the special challenges of finding real love in same-sex relationships.
Joe Kort Wayne State University School of Social Work adjunct professor and author of 10 Smart Things Gay Men Can Do to Find Real Love, appears on Internet Radio’s Full Power Living with host Ilene Dillon, M.S.W., Tuesday, October 11, 2005 (9 a.m. PDT on World Talk Radio). Kort and Dillon will be exploring the special challenges for deep, authentic intimate relationships between gays, as Full Power Living continues its exploration of human emotions.
“[There are times when] I get in touch with my anger at living in a society that shames gays and lesbians into role-playing heterosexuality. If gays were treated with respect and empathy to begin with, much personal suffering and chaos could be spared,” says author and psychotherapist Kort. All humans work to resolve early childhood wounding through their intimate relationships, and gays have additional wounding around the issues of belonging, identity and competence. Auspiciously, Kort appears on “National Coming-Out Day” to discuss his findings about what gay men can do to deepen authenticity and create the circumstances for building real love and joy in their lives.
Psychotherapist Joe Kort offers workshops for couples and singles. He runs a gay men’s therapy group and a men’s sexuality therapy group for straight, bi and gay men who are struggling with specific sexual issues. His therapy services are for gays and lesbians as well as heterosexuals. He specializes in IMAGO Relationship Therapy, a specific program involving communication exercises designed for couples to enhance their relationship and for singles to learn relationship skills based on the books Getting The Love You Want and Keeping The Love You Find by Dr. Harville Hendrix (who appeared on Full Power Living September 20). A graduate of Michigan State University with dual majors in Psychology and Social Work, he earned his Master’s in Social Work (MSW), then a Master’s (MA) in Psychology at Wayne State University. His articles and columns have appeared in The Detroit Free Press, Between the Lines Newspaper for Gays and Lesbians, The Detroit News, The Oakland Press, The Royal Oak Mirror, and other publications. Now an adjunct professor teaching Gay and Lesbian Studies at Wayne State University’s School of Social Work, Kort is author of 10 Smart Things Gay Men Can Do to Improve Their Lives, and his new book, due in December, 10 Smart Things Gay Men Can Do to Find Real Love.
